Plaster, a pasty composition (as of lime or gypsum, water, and sand) that hardens on drying and is used for coating walls, ceilings, and partitions. Plastering is one of the most ancient building techniques. Plastering a layer over masonry or concrete surface will protect the wall and other concrete elements against the atmospheric effect and provide an excellent finish to the surface.

Contrary to popular belief, plastering is the term given to the whole trade. This means that skimming is actually a technique that a plasterer uses, rather than plastering and skimming being completely separate terms.  Plasterers perform a wide range of plastering tasks and must be well-versed in their craft. Certain products, for example, require more coats of plaster than others, and there are many procedures involved in completing a flawless job.

Skimming is the term used to describe a plastering technique in which a wall is plastered with a thin coat of plaster. It is usually used to smooth the surface of an existing mortar. It’s a challenging job that should not be undertaken by an inexperienced DIYer so the wall or ceiling can end up looking worse than before!
